Let's Make A Custom Cake

Nothing says party like a perfect cake! Sometimes one of our simple pre-designed cakes will do, but sometimes you already have a specific design in mind. Whatever you are after, The Whisktakers team can help make your dream cake come true.

​Step 1: Designing your cake (~1 hour)
​First we design your cake based on your party theme or on personal interests or style. Many customers also send us pictures of cakes they found online and discuss any changes they would like to add.

​We would then draw sketches if required and send them to you for approval. The sketch or photo then becomes our blueprint for the actual cake.

Step 2: Buy ingredients (~1 hour)
​We don't always have all the ingredients and equipment on hand, since these will depend on the cake's design, flavour and filling. Here is a list of what we normally purchased for a basic 8" custom cake:

• Basic ingredients: butter, eggs, flour, milk, sugar, vanilla...
• Filling and frosting: cream, butter, icing sugar, chocolate, fresh fruits...
• Sugar paste: coloured sugar paste, glitters and sparkles can be quite expensive
• Packaging: cake boards, boxes, paper, ribbons...

Step 3: Bake the cake (~1 to 2 hours)
​Once we have gathered everything we need, we sanitise the kitchen and we are all set to begin - Line the tins, weigh the ingredients, mix the batter and bake the cake. Different cake batters take different times in the oven. Once, the cake is done, we have to wait for it to cool completely. Meanwhile, we clean the bench area, make the frosting and set up our equipment for decorations.

​Step 4: Fill the cake (~1 hour)
​After preparing the frosting, we level, fill, stack and trim the cake. Now we have a clean canvas to work with.

Step 5: Decorate the cake (~4 to 8 hours... sometimes more)
Decorations can take a very long time to complete based on the complexity of your designs. This process may involve preparing the sugar paste, adjusting the colours and smooth the cake. Sugar decorations are then cut or moulded. We can also add 3D sculptures such as flowers, characters or lettering. Then to finish off the cake, we would assemble all elements, pipe any icing decorations and add messages to the cake.

Step 6 - Package and deliver (~1 to 2 hours)
​After taking a few snapshots, we build a box and securely pack the cake. Then, a very difficult task follows and that is to drive very slowly, take turns with precautions and deliver the cake safely to the customers' front door. The cake delivery is when we will bid your cake farewell, it is now in good hands... yours :)

Baking a custom cake can take a long time as you can see, but it is one of the most enjoyable part of being a baker at The Whisktakers. We get to turn ingredients into a fabulous and delicious work of art.
