How to add flowers to your cake

One cake style that has been trending for a long time is the tall tower cake, either fully frosted with buttercream, or left semi-naked. And one beautiful way to decorate this style of cake is none other than FLOWERS!!!
At The Whisktakers, we can decorate your cakes with either:
  • fresh flowers ($$$),
  • sugar paste flowers ($$) or
  • faux flowers ($).
The price of your overall cake will depend on which one you choose. If you don’t want to break your piggy bank, you can also decide to DIY your own floral arrangement. Simply let us know, and we’ll ensure to leave your designated spots clear and provide you with a stunning canvas to work on :)

But as always,
food safety comes first! So we hope this blog + video will be helpful if you decide to add fresh flowers by yourself.

#1 - Choose your flowers
Only use non-toxic and organic flowers that haven’t been in contact with pesticides. Some flowers might be toxic if consumed, so better safe than sorry. If you’re unsure, simply do a quick Google search or you can ask your florist when you’re ordering them.

#2 - Cut & Wash
Cut the stalks so that they are a few centimetres long and wash the flowers thoroughly in water. This is to remove any pollen, dust, insect, or other particles. Dry them on a paper towel.

Wrap the stem in green floral tape, to avoid the fluids/saps from the flowers to leach into the cake layers. We don’t want those icky fluids in our food. Yucky! (If you can’t find floral tape, you can use cling wrap or aluminium foil). If the stem is too soft, many people recommend using cake flower wire for extra support. However at The Whisktakers, we try to avoid using metal wires in cakes, and prefer to use toothpicks or skewers instead. That’s just us though; we can be a bit paranoid :P

#3 - Insert in straw
If you want to position your flowers at a particular angle, we would recommend you slip it into a bubble tea straw. Yes we’re talking about those big straws you get when you buy Asian tea drinks. They are very versatile and come in handy in the cake business as well. Make sure to look for some transparent ones rather than the colourful ones if possible, as you don’t want these to stand out. Simply trim the straw to 4-8cm, and poke it into the cake at your desired angle. Then insert your flower stems into it. Ta-daaaa! (You can also buy flower picks instead of straws if you prefer, but straws are a much cheaper alternative)

#4 - Remove before serving
Everyone is now looking forward to devour the cake! Let them drool and take your time to admire your work of art, and don’t forget to take lots of snaps. You’ve put in a lot of effort after all, and this is definitely Insta-worthy (lol did I use this term correctly?)
Before serving to your guests, please ensure all flowers and foliage are removed. As an extra precaution, you can also scrape out the cream that was in contact with your flowers. And that’s it! Now it’s time to enjoy your delicious cake!
