How to cut your cake

If you follow us on social media, you have probably noticed that lately we are really into those tall sleek cake designs, every cake artist has a phase I suppose hahaha! 😂

Now I know what you’re thinking… how do you cut these towering layers of cake without making an embarrassing mess???
“HaPPY BirthDAy to you 🎶, Happy Birthday to YOUUU 🎶” Everyone is singing loudly, birthday person is awkwardly standing there. He/she blows the candles and pretends to cut the cake while people are frantically taking pictures. Now comes the stressful moment, the high pressure situation, it’s time to actually cut the cake, and have enough pieces to serve all the guests! And YOU are in charge! 😊

Worry not! We have included a step-by-step video on how you can cut our cakes.

For us, Katherine Sabbath’s super ingenious method has been our go-to ever since we came across her video. Her method allows us to choose whether we want a big or smaller slice, all with the perfect amount of frosting YUMMY-li-CIOUS

Useful Tips:

#1
If using a serrated knife, do the sawing motion so that you don’t compress the cake. If you opt for a straight-edged knife (like we did in our video), make sure it is sharp and a bit warm. Otherwise you might end up squishing the cake downwards and end up with a staggered slice of cake, it will still taste delicious though!

#2
Always clean your knife’s blade before each cut. You can use a damp cloth with hot tap water or a tall jug of warm water with some kitchen towel. A clean blade will give you a nice clean slice each time. No sticking, smearing or tearing up your cake.

#3
It’s handy to have multiple cutting boards ready if it’s a big cake. While you’re cutting your vertical slab, have someone else portion it into smaller serving sizes. The faster it’s done, the faster you’d be able to enjoy your serve! 😂

#4
If it’s winter, you’re in luck! A cool cake is way easier to cut as the buttercream is not on the verge of melting. If it’s a very hot day, give it a quick chill in the fridge for 10 mins or so, and let the frosting set firm before cutting. HOWEVER ALWAYS SERVE YOUR CAKE AT ROOM TEMPERATURE, that’s when the texture will be at its best.
#5
For our Double-Barrel cakes, you will find that we have a concealed cakeboard within the cake itself. We would recommend the exact same technique, but you’ll just have to do it twice. It is basically cutting 2 cakes.
#6
For serving sizes, you can go for dessert slices or coffee slices. In any case, for big crowds, we highly recommend going for these slices rather than the usual wedges. You can serve coffee slices or even finger slices to guests who only want to taste a tiny bit, and for the cake lovers… they can always grab a second/third serve!

There is no proper way to cut a cake, there is no exact maths behind it, YOU DO YOU! You can do the old school method of cutting into V-shaped wedges. Or the round circle method where you cut an inner circle before cutting your wedges. At the end of the day we all just want to stuff our face with cake! 😊

Good luck with your next cake cutting. Do it with confidence, and everyone will tell you how good you are at slicing cake. You may even become the designated person at all parties!
